Here is what is going on and how you can get a United States visa appointment.


1. Cities With Quick Slot Openings

If you want to wait try the southern and eastern consulates.

  • Hyderabad: This city is a big tech center. So its taking 8 months to get a visitor visa.. If you are applying for an H-1B or L-1 visa, for the first time you still have to go to Hyderabad for the interview.


3. Why Some Cities Open Slots Faster

Specialization: The U.S. Embassy has decided to send all H-1B applicants to Hyderabad. This helps cities like Chennai to process more visitor and student visas.

  • Staffing Levels: The U.S. State Department is planning to add 100 officers in India in 2026. These officers will be sent to cities that need them the most for work.

  • Localized Demand: Mumbai and Delhi get a lot of visitors, from North and West India. This means they have work to do compared to Kolkata, which handles less travel.


4. Here is a smart way to get a slot.

The best time to look for slots is at night or very early in the morning from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM IST. This is when slots that people canceled are made available again by the consulates.

  • You do not have to go to the consulate that's closest to your home. Sometimes it is an idea to take a flight to Chennai or Kolkata if it means you can get a slot sooner even if it costs money.

  • The best thing to do is book a slot soon as you can anywhere in India. This way you have a slot. If something urgent comes up you can ask for an Expedited or Emergency Appointment. Slots are very important to get an Expedited or Emergency Appointment. Having a slot is necessary, for an Expedited or Emergency Appointment.


Important Tip: The One-Reschedule Rule

The U.S. Embassy in India has a rule.

  • As of January 2026 they will let you reschedule your appointment once for free.If you try to change it you will have to pay the MRV fee all over again.

  • Do not keep changing your appointment slot by clicking the reschedule button many times.

  • This is called "slot shopping". You might end up paying extra.

  • The U.S. Embassy in India wants you to commit to your appointment.They are strict, about the one-time free reschedule policy. You can only reschedule once.After that you have to pay the MRV fee if you want to change it.
