U.S. Consulate Kolkata Visa Interview Procedure – From Entry to Exit

Attending your U.S. visa interview can be a smooth experience when you know what to expect inside the consulate or embassy. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you stay prepared and confident.

1. Location

Arrival: Aim to arrive at the Consulate no more than 1 Hour before your scheduled appointment time. Arriving too early may require you to wait outside, and arriving late may cause a cancellation.


2.  Security Check

  • Arrive 15–30 minutes before your scheduled time.

  • Strict security: No mobile phones, bags, or electronic devices allowed inside.

  • Only carry your documents in a clear folder.

  • Follow the instructions of the security staff carefully.

3. Document Verification

After security clearance, a staff member will check your key documents:

  • Passport

  • DS-160 confirmation page

  • Appointment letter

  • Visa category documents (I-20, SEVIS, employment letter, invitation, etc.)

They will confirm your information and guide you to the next section.

4. Biometrics (if not already done at VAC)

  • If your fingerprints were already taken at the Visa Application Center (VAC), they just verify them.Otherwise, fingerprints (all 10 fingers) are collected here.

5. Queue for Interview

  • You are guided to a waiting area.Staff will direct applicants row by row to the visa officer counters.The queue moves fast; officers may finish in 2–3 minutes per applicant.

6. Visa Interview – Result

When your token number is called, proceed to the interview counter.

  • Answer clearly and confidently.

  • Hand over the required documents when asked.

The officer will inform you of the result:

  • Approved: You’ll be informed that your visa is approved, and your passport will be kept for stamping.

  • Refused: If refused, you’ll receive your passport back immediately along with a refusal slip.

7. Exit

Once your interview is complete:

  • Follow the signs for the exit.

  • You will leave the building and go through the exit gate.

  • Remember to return to your locker facility to collect your belongings
