The B-1/B-2 Interview Waiver ("Drop Box") Program

1. What Is the B-1/B-2 Interview Waiver (Dropbox)?

The Interview Waiver Program allows certain visa applicants to renew their U.S. business/tourist visas without an in-person consular interview. Instead, applicants submit their documents via a designated drop-off location (often called "Drop Box").

2. Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility is primarily focused on visa renewals and applicants who meet specific age criteria.

Basic Eligibility Conditions (General Guidelines for B-1/B-2 Renewal)

To be considered for the interview waiver for a B-1/B-2 visa renewal, you must typically meet all of the following general requirements:

  • So you want a B-1/B-2 visa. You already had a United States visa that's, like the one you are applying for now. This old visa was also a B-1, B-2 or a B-1/B-2 visa. You are trying to get another B-1/B-2 visa.

  • Recent Expiration: Your prior B-1/B-2 visa is either still valid or has expired within the last 12-48 months (the exact number of months often changes, so check your local Embassy's policy).

  • Full Validity Issuance: The Full Validity Issuance of your visa means it was issued for the full time it was supposed to be valid. For example if someone from your country gets a visa that's usually valid, for 10 years then that is how long your previous visa was issued for.

  • No Refusals/Ineligibilities: You have never been refused a visa (unless the refusal was overcome or waived) and have no apparent or potential ineligibility under U.S. immigration law.

  • Your recent visa is still okay. It was not. Stolen. Nobody canceled it. Took it away, from you. Your recent visa is still valid.

  • You are sending in your application from the country where you're a citizen or where you live.

  • Biometrics: You have previously submitted your ten fingerprints (biometrics).

3. Age-Based Exemptions (Often Applicable to Any Visa Class)

  • People who want to apply for a visa may also be able to get one if they are the age even if they have never applied for this kind of visa before. The visa class is still the same. The age criteria, for the visa class is what matters.

  • Children Under 14: Applicants who are under 14 years of age.

  • Seniors Over 79: Applicants who are 80 years of age or older.

  • Again, confirm these criteria on your local U.S. Embassy/Consulate website.

4. How the Dropbox Process Works

  • Complete Online Application: Fill out DS-160 form and pay visa fee

  • Schedule Appointment: Book through the Visa Appointment Service website

  • Prepare Documents: Gather all required materials

  • Drop Off: Submit documents at designated location (often a Visa Application Center)

  • Drop Off: Submit documents at designated location (often a Visa Application Center)

  • They look at the documents, at the United States Embassy or Consulate. The people who work at the United States Embassy or Consulate check the documents. This is where they review the documents at the United States Embassy or Consulate.

  • Passport Return: Typically via courier service to your chosen location

5. Documents Required

The official Drop Box letter will have the list of things you need to do.. Usually the main documents are these:

  • Current Passport: Valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the U.S.

  • Previous Passport(s): Containing your most recent U.S. visa.

  • DS-160 Confirmation Page: The printed page with the barcode.

  • Drop Box Confirmation Letter: The printed letter/confirmation from the appointment scheduling website.

  • MRV Fee Payment Receipt: Proof of payment for the application fee.

  • You need to get a photograph. This photograph should be one color photo. It has to be two inches by two inches. The photo must be taken in the six months. The photograph has to meet the specifications for a U.S. Visa photo. You have to do this even if you already uploaded a photo, to the DS-160 form.

  • Supplemental Documents: Depending on your situation (e.g., birth certificate for a minor, school letter for a student, employment letter).

6. Processing Time

Typically 7-14 business days after document submission

Can vary based on embassy/consulate workload and individual cases

During peak seasons, processing may take longer

7. When an Interview May Still Be Required

  • So you might be eligible for Dropbox at first. You can still be called for an interview if Dropbox thinks you need one, for Dropbox.

  • We need details to understand this better. Can you please give us some information or clarify what you are trying to say about the additional information? This will help us to know what kind of information or clarification is needed.

  • Your application raises eligibility questions

  • You have had some changes in your life since you got your visa. This means that something, about your situation is different now compared to when you were given your visa. Your circumstances have changed since your visa.

  • We did not collect your fingerprints before. This is the time we are going to take your fingerprints. Your fingerprints were not, in our system because we did not collect them previously.

  • Random quality control selection

  • You're applying for your first visa (not a renewal)

Key Takeaway

The B-1/B-2 Interview Waiver (Drop Box) is a convenience primarily for renewing a visa in the same class within a specific expiration window, or for very young/old applicants. You must confirm your eligibility and the required documentation directly through the official U.S. Visa Scheduling website for your location.
