U.S. Visa Renewal Rules: Who Qualifies for an Interview Waiver

1. What is an interview waiver?

An interview waiver lets some people send in their application and passport to a place, like a VFS center without having to meet a consular officer in person.

  • This means they do not have to go for an interview.

  • The interview waiver is, for applicants only.

  • They can simply mail in. Drop off their documents.

2. Renewing the Same Visa Category

This is the rule to remember. You can only use the Interview Waiver if you are applying for a visa in the category as the one you had before.

  • The Interview Waiver is for people who want to renew the type of visa they already had.

  • For example let us say you had a B1/B2 visa before. You used this B1/B2 visa to visit the United States for tourism or business. Now you want to apply for another B1/B2 visa. You can use the Interview Waiver because you are applying for the type of visa.

  • On the hand if you had an F-1 visa before and you used this F-1 visa to study in the United States and now you want to apply for a B1/B2 visa you cannot use the Interview Waiver. This is because the B1/B2 visa is for a purpose, which is tourism or business and not, for studying. You have to apply for the B1/B2 visa and go to an interview.

3. Previous Screening And Age Requirements

  • Your previous visa has to be one that was given to you after you turned 18 years old this is the rule for B-visas.

  • Your old visa must have been given to you for the time it was supposed to be and it cannot have any notes, on it that say "Clearance Received" or "Waiver Granted".

  • You have to send in your application from the country where you're a citizen or the country where you live this is where you must apply for the visa the visa application, that is.

4. Visa Expired Within the Timeframe

The interview waiver is something that depends on when your previous visa expired. If your visa expired recently you might be able to get a waiver. For example if your visa expired a months ago you can probably qualify. The thing is, the rules about this can change, so the exact timeframe's not always the same. Your visa has to have expired within a time and this time can be different depending on what the current rules are, for visa expirations.

5. No Previous Visa Refusals After The Visa

If you got a visa refusal after your last visa was approved you might not be able to use the interview waiver program. This means the consulate will probably ask you to come in for another interview. The consulate wants to talk to you in person if you had a visa refusal, after your visa.

6. Clean Immigration. Applying In The Same Country

This point is related to something we talked about before: how the history of your travels affects whether you get a visa or not.

  • You must have a record: you should never have been forced to leave a country stayed longer than you were supposed to in the United States or worked without the right papers.

  • Applying from your country: usually you need to be living in your home country to be able to use the Interview Waiver. For example if you are a citizen of Country A but are living in Country B because of your job the rules might be different. Normally you have to apply for a United States visa, from the country where you're a citizen or where you have been living for a long time.

7. The Consulate Can Still Ask for an Interview

The consulate may still want to see you in person for an interview. This can happen even if you qualify for a waiver. The officer may need information or documents to make a decision.

  • They will let you know if they need to see you.

  • The consulate has the right to ask for an interview if they are not sure, about something.

  • They may need to clarify some details with you.

Good Luck.
