Step-by-Step Guide to the U.S. Consulate Inside Process

1. Security Check Strict security protocols are in place.

Not allowed: Mobile phones, smartwatches, laptops, USB drives, storage devices, bags, food, sealed envelopes, and any electronic gadgets.

Allowed items: Passport, DS-160 confirmation page, appointment letter, and supporting documents in a clear plastic folder.

Only carry essential documents with you. 2. Aprion Digital Locker 

To avoid stress, store your belongings safely at a locker facility before reaching the Embassy.

  • Chennai: Several Aprion Digital Locker and other locker services are available within walkable distance from the U.S. Consulate.

    • Both online and offline booking options are available.

  • Delhi: The Embassy is located in a 1 km high-security zone with no shops nearby.

    • The nearest locker shop is around 3 km away.

Use a pre-booked cab to go directly to the locker facility, store your belongings, and then head to the US Embassy.

3. Document Verification

After security clearance, a staff member will check your key documents:

  • Passport

  • DS-160 confirmation page

  • Appointment letter

  • Visa category documents (I-20, SEVIS, employment letter, invitation, etc.)

They will confirm your information and guide you to the next section.

4. Biometrics (if not already done at VAC)

If your fingerprints were already taken at the Visa Application Center (VAC), they just verify them.

Otherwise, fingerprints (all 10 fingers) are collected here. 5. Queue for Interview

You are guided to a waiting area.

Staff will direct applicants row by row to the visa officer counters.

Queue moves fast; officers may finish in 2–3 minutes per applicant 6. Visa Interview – Result

When your token number is called, proceed to the interview counter.

  • Answer clearly and confidently.

  • Hand over the required documents when asked.

The officer will inform you of the result:

Approved: You’ll be informed that your visa is approved, and your passport will be kept for stamping.

Refused: If refused, you’ll receive your passport back immediately along with a refusal slip. 7. Exit

Once your interview is complete:

  • Follow the signs for the exit.

  • You will leave the building and go through the exit gate.

  • Remember to return to your locker facility to collect your belongings.

8. Total Time Inside

Usually 1 to 2 hours (sometimes longer if crowded).

 The interview itself often takes only 5–7 minutes.
