What you wear is important even though there is no rule, about what to wear. Your appearance matters.
When you go for an interview you should wear clothes that are clean and modest. This is what people call "business casual" attire. Wearing "business casual" attire is an idea because it shows that you really care about the interview and you are taking it seriously. You want to make an impression so dressing in "business casual" attire is the way to go.
Avoid: Overly casual clothes like sleeveless tops, shorts, or flip-flops.
6. Inside the Consulate
The process they have inside is very organized. You should do what the security people and the staff at the consulate tell you to do. They are there to help you with the process, at the consulate.
Queue and Security: They will call you in at the time of your appointment. When that happens you will go through a security check that's really thorough, kind of like the one they have at the airport. This security check, for the Queue and Security is very strict.
Document Verification: You will be directed to a counter where your appointment letter and DS-160 confirmation are checked.
Fingerprint Verification: They need you to scan your fingerprints again to make sure they match the ones they took when you went to your Biometrics appointment at the Visa Application Center.
When you get to the Interview Queue you have to wait. They have an area where you sit and wait for your turn. Then they will call you to go to the interview window. You will wait in this Interview Queue until it is your turn.
The Interview: A Consular Officer will call you to their window. They will ask for your passport and may ask for other documents. They will ask you questions about the purpose of your trip, your finances, your work/studies, and your ties to India. Answer clearly, confidently, and honestly.
7. Passport Approval & Delivery
So your visa gets approved. Then what happens is that they will keep your passport for a while. After that they will send your passport to you through a courier service. They will deliver it to the address you chose. You can pick it up from a location. You should get your passport within a days.
You can check on your passport and visa status at the following website: www.ustraveldocs.com/in. This is where you go to see what is happening with your passport and visa.
If denied, you will be informed immediately and given back your passport.
Final Tips & Good Luck!
Be Truthful: Answer all questions honestly. Consistency between your answers and your documents is key.
Be Confident & Concise: Listen to the question carefully and answer directly. Do not volunteer unsolicited information.
Bring All Documents: It's better to have a document and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Stay Calm: The interview is usually very short (2-5 minutes). Take a deep breath and be polite.
Good luck with your interview! Stay positive and confident.
